Vegan Horchata Now Available at Whole Foods

horchataHorchata, for those are unfamiliar with the term, is a sweet, refreshing drink that dates back hundreds of years. Usually made with tigernuts (though recipes differ by country), the drink is a favorite in Mexico, Guatemala, Venezuela and numerous other Latin American countries. The concoction also includes sugar, cinnamon, vanilla and frequently, milk.

Now, thanks to Califia Farms, vegans can scoop up the refreshing, traditional treat at Whole Foods everywhere.

“We created our first flavors of Califia Horchatas because we are inspired by the heritage of Horchatas: the chufa, or tigernut, is an incredible ingredient, and we wanted to see how we could ‘Califia-ize’ this traditional drink by adding Almondmilk,” Califia Farms’ Kaitlin Walter told Latest Vegan News.

“The unique combination of cinnamon and rice milk is delightful, so we started there and added on, going back to the roots with Chufa and our favorite nut, the almond. We created this line to honor the millions of our fans who love traditional Horchata but are looking for a healthier, lighter version that is completely dairy-free.”

The vegan horchata comes in two flavors (Vanilla Coconut and Classic Cinnamon), and is available at Whole Foods nationwide through September.

If you need extra incentive to support this brand, its manufacturing plant (in Bakersfield, Calif.) is eco-friendly, energy efficient and repurposes more than 90 percent of its post-production byproduct. It’s also the fastest-growing natural beverage company in the U.S.

And, if you wanna get creative, the company also offers a coffee cocktail recipe, perfect for lazy summer mornings:

Cochata Cocktail
1 bottle Classic Cinnamon Horchata (6 cups) + 2 cups Concentrated Cold Brew Coffee + 2 cups rum. Serve over ice.
