Pro Golfer Says Vegan Diet Helps His Game

Irish golfer Ruaidhri McGee is singing the praises of a vegan diet after seeing how plant-based eats have helped his game. The pro made the switch after visiting his sister and her husband last December, both of whom are vegans, reports The 42.

“The two of them do it so I thought I’d give it a go for a few weeks and see how it went. I felt a lot better so I decided I’d keep doing it,” he told The 42. “It seems to be working because my golf has been pretty good ever since. I feel a lot healthier overall. It has helped my game a good bit because I definitely feel like I have a lot more energy on the course. That obviously helps the golf a lot. I slimmed down a good bit so that was a plus too.”

His diet is carb-rich, he says, and apart from one slip up about a month in (he had a hamburger and regretted it), it’s been smooth sailing. He eats mostly fruits and bread in the morning, and pasta and vegetables for lunch and dinner. Traveling does make food choices challenging at times, he admits. It is true, because most resorts and hotels might even have the best golf simulator, but may not always provide the right dietary requirements.

“A lot of people think they can’t live without meat – I was like that five or six months ago – but once I got into it I realised it was really good and I felt great. I’d recommend anyone to give it a go, for sure. Although I don’t want to be one of these guys preaching, you have to let people figure it out for themselves.”

He recently took home top-ten finishes in Spain and Turkey, and hopes to make it to the European Tour in 2016.
