Vegan Toona Expanding Into Canada

image001Americans eat a lot of tuna, and in addition to overfishing issues, the uber-popular seafood carries significant risks due to its mercury content.

So what’s a tuna fish-loving consumer to do?

Try Vegan Toona. This new product by Sophie’s Kitchen Vegan Seafood hit store shelves last year, and is about to expand its reach into Canada. The cans have been picked up by distributors in the northern nation, and markets are starting to stock it now.

The Sophie’s Kitchen brand was inspired by the founders’ daughter, Sophie, who loved seafood but was hindered by allergic reactions. To solve the problem, they decided to create seafood safe for everyone.

In the U.S., the Vegan Toona is available at a whole host of retailers (1,600, actually) including Whole Foods, Vitamin Cottage, EarthFare, Wegman’s, and Safeway, plus lots of independent stores.

The tuna alternative is made Konjac root, an ancient, Asian superfood, and is kosher, gluten-free and non-GMO. It comes in sea-salt (soy free) and black pepper varieties, and is packaged in BPA free cans.

If you’re wondering how Vegan Toona tastes, people on Twitter have lots of positive things to say:
