In the poker world, Daniel Negreanu is a legend. Dubbed “Kid Poker” after claiming the World Series of Poker at the tender age of 23, he’s gone on to win six World Series of Poker bracelets, two European Poker Tours and a spot in the Poker Hall of Fame.

He’s also vegan, and he wants the world to know how his diet helps him kick ass. In a piece entitled Being Vegan Makes Me a Better Poker Player, Negreanu expounds on his dietary choices and all the reasons veganism is the way to go.

As he explains, his former diet wreaked havoc with his health, and he felt wretched eating lots of meat and other nutritionally questionable foods. In 2000 he went vegetarian and in 2006, vegan.

Initially, he says, other poker players gave him a hard time. Times have changed, however.

“The other players are a lot more accepting now, they embrace my veganism! In the past they laughed at me, now they all want to try it. Recently I had 12 bags of food delivered to the casino floor from an Asian-themed vegan restaurant called Loving Hut,” Negreanu writes. “I was handing it out at the poker tables, everyone loved it.”

Negreanu is also reportedly working with director James Cameron on a documentary designed to dispel the “real men eat meat” myth.

“My diet’s now as good as it’s ever been and although my veganism started out absolutely about health, it’s also become about the environment and animal cruelty,” he says in the piece. “The way animals are treated and the conditions are atrocious. They’re force fed steroids, the chickens are de-beaked. You end up eating sick, diseased chickens because they’re living in shit. It’s like a holocaust on animals.”

“I try not to push veganism specifically. If I’m asked for my advice, I say just eat healthy.” Wise words of advice from vegan poker champ Daniel Negreanu.

I’m so proud of you, Daniel, for being a Vegan. I dated Mike Sexton for ten years and remained a Vegan the whole time. I don’t eat or wear animals. They live in the worst Holocaust imaginable. People just turn their heads and ignore their immense suffering and horrible lives they are forced to indure. Plus, it is not at all healthy to eat meat, chicken, fish, or dairy. Heart disease, diabetes, cancer, etc. are rampant with no cure except a change of diet.
