New Campaign Calls for Non-Dairy Options at Ben & Jerry’s

So long Free Cone Day—Ben & Jerry’s annual ice cream jubilee has earned a new moniker: Free the Cows Day. Thanks to FARM (Farm Animal Rights Movement), April 14th is now about going dairy-free.

Chubby Hubby would be so much better without any animals involved.

The animal advocacy group has launched a new campaign asking the legendary Vermont-based purveyor to add cruelty-free options to its ice cream lineup.

Given that the company is known for its progressive social stance, lots of people have questioned why it still hasn’t hopped on the vegan train. After all, Ben & Jerry’s product mission is (according to its website):

To make, distribute and sell the finest quality all natural ice cream and euphoric concoctions with a continued commitment to incorporating wholesome, natural ingredients and promoting business practices that respect the Earth and the Environment.

Given the impact of animal agriculture on the environment, it’s about time the company recognized the need to evolve into a new, sustainable business model.

A Change.org petition calling for non-dairy options at Ben & Jerry’s has earned more than 11,000 signatures—and a shout out from Senator Cory Booker (you’d think they’d listen to him, considering they were thinking of giving him his own flavor).

To support the cause, FARM’s campaign is asking people to pass out brochures to ice cream lovers waiting in line on April 14th.

“With their annual ‘Free Cone Day’ promotional event coming up on Tuesday, April 14, we’re seeking dedicated activists to leaflet people as they wait in line,” says the FARM’s campaign website.
