Morrissey to Al Gore: Animal Products at a Climate Change Event ‘Is Like Selling Pistols at a Gun-Control Rally’

Animal activist and former Smiths singer, Morrissey, is an outspoken critic of meat eating, even canceling concerts at venues that refuse to go vegetarian.

Now, Morrissey is taking Al Gore to task. Gore recently announced a series of global concerts designed to help raise awareness for climate change: “Live Earth Road to Paris.” The concert venues, however, will not be vegan.

Morrissey has called Al Gore out on the issue in an open letter published by Rolling Stone.

“We already know that raising animals for food is a leading cause of climate change and that moving toward a vegan diet is necessary to combat climate change’s worst effects,” Morrissey wrote.

“Animal agriculture severely affects the world’s freshwater supply and is a major contributor to global greenhouse-gas emissions, deforestation, loss of biodiversity and air and water pollution, among many other harmful effects.”

“Serving meat and dairy products at an event to combat climate change is like selling pistols at a gun-control rally.”

“If you choose to serve animal flesh at Live Earth, you’ll be making a mockery of the very concept of the event, in which case it should be renamed Dead Earth: We Contributed!”

Also in the letter, Morrissey tells Al Gore to go vegan at the venues because anything else would be “greenwashing.” Gore is vegan himself, so he’s clearly aware of the harmful effects of a meat-eating diet.

The concerts will feature up to 100 artists and include performances in New York, South Africa, Australia, China, Brazil and Paris over a 24-hour period on June 18th, leading up to the United Nations conference in Paris. Pharrell Williams has been named creative director.

No word yet on Gore’s response, but considering he made the glaring mistake of failing to mention animal agriculture in An Inconvenient Truth, maybe it’s time he stepped up.
